Here We Go - First Assignment

Monday, January 25, 2010

Here we go with what I hope will be a fun and interesting project for all the students and teachers that are involved. The first thirty or so pages of Hugo are pictures/illustrations. Great illustrations but when you have to show two pages, then flip the page, view two more pages, you often don't get the full effect or do you. Brian Selznick has made it possible to watch by turning the opening pages into a video. The three questions you are to think about and answer after watching the video and before moving on to the next part of the book are :

  1. Why does the boy keep looking behind him?
  2. Who is the older man and what role does he play in the story?
  3. What importance will clocks have in our story?
Below is the video link to the video. Teachers, If we could have individual students comment rather then whole classes, it would make the discussion more meaningful for all that are involved. Once you have commented on the blog, be sure to check back and see what other students are thinking about the opening scene.

The boy keeps looking back because he might think someone is behind him and possibly might hear some strange noises. The older man is maybe the bad person and maybe the store owner. The clocks have an importance in our story because it's a good hiding spot from the old man!

I think the boy is looking behind him to see if someone is following him. I think the older man knows that the boy gets in trouble a lot.
I think the boy loves clocks and is trying to investigate them.

The boy is looking behind him because maybe someone is chasing him so he does not want to get seen. the older man is the grandfather. the clocks will tell the time so that means SOMEONE in the story has to be some where at a certain time.

The boy keeps looking behind him to make sure nobody is there. I think the old man is grandfather time. The people will die without time running.

I think the boy looks behind himself because he thinks someone is behind him and maybe he hears strange noises and needs to cheek it out and see what is going on. I think he is a good man who helps Hugo and protects him from any dander that he might come across and I think he plays an important part in the story because he shows up a lot. I think that they are important because he might hide in them or they might help him if he has a secret mission or something to do and needs to be sneaky to do his job.I just think that they will play an important part in the story because they show up a lot in the story or that's what it looks like to me.

1. I predict the boy in our story looks behind him a lot because a man is following him.2.I predict the old man in our story is someone who wants something from the boy in our story.I think he will participate in our story in that he will be a thief that is mean.3.I predict the clock in our story will be the boys and the old man will try to steel it but all goes wrong because the boy will hide in the clock and gets shipped away in the clock in a hot air balloon!

I think that the little boy is being chased by a guy. The old man played a part of a man at a stand where they sell stuff. The clock is so important because somebody was giving the old man something secret at 5 o'clock.

The reason he keeps looking back is because he hears a weird noise. An the old man might be a bad guy and he is chasing a little boy. The clock is a hiding spot for him.

The boy kept looking behind because he didn't know who he was and the old man kept looking at him.the old man is maybe a guy who works at a shop and the role he plays is maybe a manger. The importance of the clock in the story is people need to no what the time is in the story and to hide if he has to.

The boy (Hugo?) is looking behind him because he thinks someone is chasing him. We think he is a thief and he is living in the clock at the train station, so he doesn't want anyone to follow him.

The old man is the toy maker and he might be the boy's grandfather or godfather. He might be looking after Hugo secretly or he might have been one to kill his father.

The clocks are important because Hugo lives in the clock and we think that is where he keeps his inventions. They are also important because he is a clock keeper, and the book says he has a stolen key. Maybe the key can get him into any clock tower that he needs to. (Maybe his father's treasure is the map???)
